How to work as an Australian Vet Nurse in the UK

Aug 07, 2023

Working as a Vet Nurse in the United Kingdom (UK) as an Australian can be an amazing opportunity and I would highly recommend it if you are given the chance! Here are some general steps to get you started:

1. Check your qualifications: Ensure that your qualifications as a vet nurse in Australia are recognised in the UK. This can be done by contacting the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS), which is the regulatory body for veterinary professionals in the UK. They will guide you on the process of having your qualifications assessed.

Alternatively you can apply to work as a VCA - Veterinary Care Assistant. Which is what I have done, just because my locum periods have only been a maximum of 3 weeks at a time.

2. Obtain a visa or right to work in the UK: As an Australian citizen, you will need to obtain the appropriate visa to work in the UK. If you have a British passport like myself, then you can work in the UK WITHOUT the need for a Visa.

4. Job search: Get in contact with Global Veterinary Careers who will take all the hassle away for you. If you have a couple of locations in mind make sure to mention them when you get in contact. My ideal locations were Surrey or Central London, and when they located me a spot in Notting hill I was over the moon!

5. Interview and job offer: Once you find a suitable job opportunity, you may be invited for an interview. Make sure to put your best foot forward! If you are offered a job, this is great as you will need the official job offer to progress with your Visa application.

6. Visa application: With the job offer in hand, proceed to apply for your Tier 2 (General) visa. This involves completing the visa application form, paying the relevant fees, and providing supporting documents, including your job offer, qualifications, and evidence of finances.

7. Book your flights and find some accomodation: Now the fun part! Global Veterinary careers may be able to find you a clinic that includes accommodation (BONUS!), if not that’s okay, I would recommend booking accomodation that is within walking distance of the clinic or easily accessible to the tube if you are in central London.

8. Familiarising yourself with the area: Jump on google maps and even Tiktok to look for local attractions, restaurants and recommendations to make sure your days off are filled with activities.

Have fun, and don’t be nervous! You’re going to love it.
